Old Townhouse Restaurant — A True Ocean Beach Classic

A short walk from the sand in Ocean Beach, there’s a breakfast spot that feels like stepping into a piece of neighborhood history. For more than 50 years, the Old Townhouse Restaurant has been serving hearty homemade meals and welcoming locals like family.
Like so many American stories, the Old Townhouse began with a journey and a dream.
In 1969, Chris and Soula emigrated from Greece to the United States in search of opportunity. Chris worked as an aircraft mechanic while Soula focused on raising their three children. But the couple shared a bigger dream — owning their own business.
After studying what made other restaurants successful and scouting locations around San Diego, they found the perfect spot just two blocks from the beach in the laid-back coastal community of Ocean Beach. The building, formerly known as Spyro’s Coffee Shop, had potential.
With help from family and friends, Chris and Soula did much of the construction themselves. They wanted the restaurant to feel warm, welcoming, and familiar — like walking into a home rather than a business. That vision inspired the name: The Old Townhouse.
By August of 1973, the restaurant was ready to open its doors.
Chris, a talented self-taught cook, focused on the kitchen, creating homemade comfort food that quickly earned a loyal following. Soula worked the dining room, greeting customers and making sure everyone felt welcome. She was known for remembering customers’ names and treating every guest like family.
Together, they built something special — a neighborhood restaurant where quality food and genuine hospitality mattered more than anything else.

Over the decades, the Old Townhouse became a cornerstone of the Ocean Beach community. Regulars returned year after year, and the restaurant developed the kind of loyal following that only comes from decades of consistent service and familiar faces.
Eventually, the family’s oldest son Ted stepped in to continue the tradition, taking over management in 2003 and carrying forward the same values his parents built the restaurant on: quality food, warm service, and a welcoming atmosphere.
Today, the Old Townhouse still feels like a classic American diner — the kind of place where breakfast plates are generous, coffee cups stay full, and conversations between locals flow as easily as the ocean breeze down Newport Avenue.
Thousands of people have walked through the doors since 1973, and each has become part of the restaurant’s story. In many ways, that’s what makes the Old Townhouse so special — it’s not just a place to eat, it’s part of the fabric of Ocean Beach.
If you’re looking for a true local breakfast experience, this is one of the places that defines the neighborhood.
